As 1997 fades into history we look back over what happened in the old year and make plans to enter the new year. Some of us will resolve to handle things better while others will argue that resolutions are a waste of time because they are seldom kept. Personally I'm on the side of those who look for better ways to improve ourselves by giving more attention to our relationships with our families, our friends, our enemies, and our God.
Surely each and every one of us can build a richer life and it starts with personal habits. In the year just past we experienced both good and bad and it surely makes good sense to celebrate the good and learn from the bad. Here are some quotes from The Treasure Chest that just might encourage us in the year ahead:
I have no yesterdays, time took them away;
Tomorrow may not be-but I have today. Pearl Y. McGinnis
Earth's crammed with heaven,
And every common bush afire with God. Elizabeth Barrett Browning
He drew a circle that shut me out- heretic, rebel, a thing to flout.
But love and I had the wit to win; we drew a circle that took him in. Edwin Markham
Happiness comes of the capacity to feel deeply, to enjoy simply, to think freely, to risk life, to be needed. Storm Jameson
I searched for my soul but my soul I could not see.
I searched for God but he eluded me.
I searched for my brother and found all three. Anon.
There is just one way to bring up a child in the way he should go, and that is to travel that way yourself. Abraham Lincoln
What the majority of American children needs is to stop being pampered, stop being indulged, stop being chauffeured, stop being catered to. In the final analysis it is not what you do for your children but what you have taught them to do for themselves that will make them successful human beings. Ann Landers
Your success as family, our success as a society, depends not on what happens in the White House, but on what happens inside your house. Barbara Bush.
Grow old along with me! The best is yet to be, The last of life, for which the first was made... Robert Browning
I believe in the immortality of the soul because I have within me immortal longings. Helen Keller
Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Jesus (Matthew 6:33 KJV. The Bible).
